THEME: UNDERSTANDING THE HOLY SPIRIT
TOPIC: THE FRUIT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (Part 2).
TEXT(S): Gal. 5:16-25; Php. 1:9-11; 1John 4:7-11
Question: What do you understand by the fruit of the Holy Spirit and can you mention an aspect of the fruit of the Holy Spirit you know.
There is the power (gifts) of the Holy Spirit and the character (fruit) of the Holy Spirit. Often, the emphasis in most Churches is on the manifestation of the power rather than on the manifestation of the character. But the power without the character, is not sufficient.
The objectives of this lesson are to identify the fruit of the Holy Spirit; define each characteristic of the fruit of the Holy Spirit; and to know the end purpose why we must endeavour to have the fruit of the Holy Spirit in our lives
A plant is identified by the fruit it produces, (Matt. 7:12-23) Thus, the fruit of the Holy Spirit, is the distinguishing characteristic or character of the Holy Spirit. a believer who has the Holy Spirit indwelling in him/her, must manifest the character of the Holy Spirit. The fruit of the Holy Spirit include love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance (Gal. 5:22-23). These are the distinguishing characteristics of a believer filled with the Holy Spirit.
4. LONGSUFFERING: 1 Cor. 13:4; Rom. 12:19-21
Longsuffering is endurance with patience. It is having patience with people who deliberately try to upset us. In our match towards perfection and conformity to the image of the Son of God, there are some testings we must patiently overcome. Thus, patience, tolerance, endurance are part of the refining process. Holy Spirit makes it possible for us to refuse to allow resentment to rise in our hearts even towards people who repeatedly hurt or wrong us. This fruit of the Spirit helps us to go a second mile., turn the other cheek, endure insults, bear with those who mock or makes jest of us. (Matt. 5:38 – 48).
5. GENTLENESS: James 3:13-18; Prov. 15:1
Is an attitude or character that is peaceable, submissive, gracious, slow to taking offence, and never stubborn. It is always willing to co-operate in whatever way is necessary to bring that spirit of unity and one accord that the Holy Spirit blesses. It is never harsh with people’s faults but sympathetic, sensitive to their needs and problems. It gives the soft answer that turns away wrath and avoids stirring up angry outbursts of temper. As believers, we must learn this act of tender touch to issues, situations and people (2 Tim. 2:24; Titus 3:1-2; 1 Thess. 2:7).
6. GOODNESS: This is the state of being righteous. It is a character that is upright, dependable, generous to others. God is looking for good (righteous) people to stand in the gap in prayers and holiness (Ezek. 22:30). The good man is not under the control nor does he dance to the tune of the music of this present evil world. His heart and ears are tuned unto God by prayers & worship. He is under the control of the Spirit of the Almighty God (Ps. 37:23). Another aspect of this goodness is being generous and like Jesus, go out of way to help others and meet their real needs.
Revision Question: Mention the six elements of the fruit of the Holy Spirit studied so far.
What is most needed in the Church, is the character (fruit) of the Holy Spirit to keep us as the light and salt of the earth. As the believer manifests the fruit of the Holy Spirit, the deeds of the flesh are put to death, (Gal. 5:19-21).
MEMORY VERSE: Gal. 5: 22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
