I NEED TO KNOW

THEME:

UNDERSTANDING THE HOLY SPIRIT

TOPIC:

THE FRUIT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (Part 2).

TEXT(S):

Gal. 5:16-25; Php. 1:9-11; 1John 4:7-11

INTRODUCTION:

The objectives of this lesson are to identify the fruit of the Holy Spirit; define each characteristic of the fruit of the Holy Spirit; and to know the end purpose why we must endeavour to have the fruit of the Holy Spirit in our lives

FRUIT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

7. FAITH:

Faith as a fruit of the Holy Spirit, is better translated “faithfulness.” In the New

Testament, faith is never merely a mental attitude or assent but it always include faithfulness and obedience. The contrast in Gal. 5:19-23 is between the works of the

flesh and the fruit of the Spirit. This fact is primarily a faithfulness shown towards

God and towards others. Thus, a Spirit filled believer should be faithful in all areas. Consider the men in the hall of fame (Heb. 11:1-38).

8. MEEKNESS:

Meekness is a state of submission to divine will. Another aspect of meekness is

humility which does not consider itself too good to do a humble task. It is clearly an attitude that is opposite of arrogant, self-important pride, which shows no respect to

the poor and weak. The fruit of meekness manifested in the life of a Christian is a safeguard against putting oneself first. The world has a common misconception that “

if I don’t watch out for my own interest, nobody else will.” Jesus has an answer to

attitudes like this in Matt. 19:30. The true sign of a mature Christian, is that he

elevates Christ above himself. His growth is proportional to the degree in which he

exalts Christ and become smaller in his own eyes.

9. TEMPERANCE: (1 Cor. 9:25)

Temperance is not just mere moderation. Rather, it is self-control that results from self-discipline. The Spirit does not always remove immediately all the desires, impulses and tendencies of the flesh. But this fruit

grows as he helps us put to death those desires,

passions and appetites that run contrary to the will of God. That is, the Holy Spirit helps us to discipline ourselves. Consider areas which need constant surveillance: food, sex, entertainment, money, conversation and time.

Revision Question: Mention the all the components of the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

CONCLUSION:

Finally, Christians are not immune to the works of the flesh; they can guard against this by putting to death the desire of the flesh, studying and applying the word of God in every situation and being prayerful.

MEMORY VERSE:

Gal. 5: 22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
