Topic: The Shield of faith. (Part 2).
Text: Ephesians 6:10-18; Heb. 11:1-6
The Scriptures make us to understand that the only way we can relate to God is by faith. All the heroes of faith as recorded in Hebrews 11 obtained their victories through faith. This study seeks to let us into the secrets of how to make our personal faith work for us in every area of our lives.
Possible hindrances to faith:
What we hear will either uplift or dampen our faith in God. When we give our ears to false doctrine, lies and fables, then our faith will become weak. Paul told timothy to avoid being involved in discussions that do not bring glory to god. Such discussions will hinder his faith, (1Tim. 4:12)
When Peter took his eyes off Jesus when He called upon him to walk on the sea, Peter started to sink, (Matt. 14:22-31). Similarly, the moment we lose our focus on Jesus in life, that same moment, ‘we start to sink’. We must not look at the unfavourable circumstances/surroundings or the boisterous wind. Paying attention to the rather unpleasant circumstances around will hinder our faith.
The company we keep could hinder our faith. The Bible says “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners”, (1 Cor. 15:33). We are as strong as what we know and what we know is determined by what we hear & see. When we mix with people who despise the goodness of God or the Church we attend, then our faith will be hindered. Let us keep company with those who will encourage our faith. Sinners and the ungodly will certainly lead us astray from God or our faith, (2 Cor. 6:14-15).
Another hindrance is unbelief, (Heb. 4:2) tells us that the gospel did not profit those who did not receive it in faith. In partnership with unbelief, is doubt. We must trust God completely, otherwise, we will be unstable in all our ways, (James 1:5-8). Therefore, we must be consistent inn our belief in God and His goodness.
Some of the benefits of putting on the shield of faith:
Heb. 11 is the comprehensive list of men and women of God who through faith obtained victories over the devil. And all who will exercise their faith in God, will likewise be overcomers in life.
Jesus has promised us that whatever we ask in faith, will be given to us, (Matt. 21:22). Faith guarantees that our prayers will be answered and that nothing shall be impossible unto us, (Matt. 17:20).
We also become the children of God by faith, (John 1:12). We are also able to do the work of Christ, even greater works if we exercise our faith in Him, (John 14:12).
Other benefits include rest to our souls (peace of mind), Heb. 4:3; spiritual inheritance and assurance, (James 2:5).
i). Mention some possible hindrances to our faith.
ii). List some benefits of putting on the shield of faith
Faith is believing God for the impossible. We need the shield of faith in every area of our daily lives as workers, businessmen & women, husbands, wives, parents, children, etc. If we try to do things in our own strength or depend upon man, we will surely fail.
Our assurance/confidence is that God rewards all those who will trust and obey Him no matter the prevailing or opposing circumstances. Have faith in God today, and all things shall be possible unto you, (Mark 9:23).
Memory Verse: Ephesians 6:16 (KJV) Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
